usp=sharing - https://sites.google.com/peleteiro.com/2eso-physics-and-chemistry/2-matter-and-its-properties?pli =1 1 Physics and chemistry 2nd ESO 1. The silver ingot As you may know, valuable metals are used in jewelry to produce high-value pieces. Among these metals are gold and silver. Some people or organizations use cheaper materials by passing them off as gold and silver, fraudulently. It is necessary to have tools to detect possible counterfeits. Silver ingot We are detectives who are going to learn to identify a silver ingot so that they do not scam us. Along the way we will learn new concepts and math tools that we will use this year. Let's get started! 2. What is matter?
Do you know what matter is? Yes, of course! Matter is... everything. But wait. Everything? Think about this question: what makes matter be matter? Discuss this question with your partner. After answering the question, can you think of "something" that is not matter? Video: https://youtu.be/h2gJkGOTKxw Answer the following questions in your notebook: 1. What is matter? 2. Give examples of something around you that is not made of matter. 2 Physics and chemistry 2nd ESO 3. What is mass? 4. What is volume? You can learn more about mass in this video: https://youtu.be/KBzszSr6MWk Key ideas Matter is anything that has mass and occupies a volume. Mass is the amount of matter in an object.
Volume is the amount of space that a body takes up. 3. Properties and magnitudes What is the first thing you would do to know if the ingot is true or false? Well, look at it! Look at the ingot carefully and write in your notebook everything you can think of about it. All the features you just wrote about the ingot are properties. In fact, properties are the characteristics or features that we use to describe matter. Among all the properties of the ingot, which ones can be measured? If a property can be measured, then we call it a magnitude. Other properties of matter cannot be measured, so they are not magnitudes. Exercise 1. (Copy and solve the exercise in your notebook) 1.
What is a property of matter? 2. What is a magnitude? 3. Decide if the following are magnitudes or not: length, mass, beauty, time, happiness, speed, love and price 3 Physics and chemistry 2nd ESO Key ideas Properties are characteristics or features that describe matter. Magnitudes are properties that can be measured. 4. Measurements and units We just said that magnitudes are properties that can be measured. But what does "measuring" mean? If you are asked to measure the length of a pencil, how would you do it? To measure something we need a measuring instrument. A ruler, in our example. With the ruler we compare the size of the pencil with the size of a centimeter.
Since the pencil "contains" seven centimeters, we can conclude that it is 7 cm long. In short, when we measure we compare an unknown value of a magnitude (the length of the pencil) with a known value of the same magnitude (the centimeter). This known value is what we call a unit. It is very important that we always express the result of a measurement with a number (the quantity) and a unit. If the unit is missing, then the measurement is meaningless! Answer these questions in your notebook: 1. What is measuring? 2. What is a unit? Key ideas: 4 Physics and chemistry 2nd ESO Measuring is comparing an unknown quantity with some known quantity of the same kind.
A unit of measurement is a known value of a magnitude, so that any other quantity of the same magnitude can be expressed as a multiple of the unit of measurement. The result of a measurement consists of: the unit of measurement, and the number of units the object contains. 5. General and specific properties To identify if the silver ingot is true or false, it is not enough to look at its color, but rather it is necessary to see if the material is what it should be. We have to be able to measure some property of that material that makes it unique. We must then learn to identify the general and specific properties of matter. Look at this picture. Can you guess what the Mystery Box contains?
Here are some clues: the Mystery Box contains something that has a mass of 200 g. Do you know what it is? It is at a temperature of 23 °C. Any idea? Another clue: it occupies a volume of 0.2 L. Do you know now what it is? What if you are told that it boils at 100 °C? 5 Physics and chemistry 2nd ESO You probably already know what the content of the box is. What was the property that allowed you to decide what was in the box? Mass, temperature, volume... These magnitudes do not allow us to identify the type of substance. They are called general properties. On the other hand, the boiling point of a substance is specific to that substance, and no other.
These properties that allow us to identify matter are called specific properties. Exercise 2. (Copy and solve the exercise in your notebook) Classify the following magnitudes according to whether they are general or specific: mass, density, temperature, boiling point (temperature at which a liquid boils), melting point (temperature at which a solid melts). Key ideas: Properties of matter can be general or specific. Specific properties are properties of a substance, not a specific object. Specific properties can be used to identify matter because their values depend on the type of substance. 6. Can density help us find out if our ingot is fake?
One of the specific properties of matter is density. This means that, knowing the density of a substance, we can then identify what substance it is. And there is the answer to our first question: if we measure the density of our ingot, we can know if it is made of silver, or if, on the contrary, it is fake. But, before we go any further, do you know what density is? Video What is Density? Exercises Answer the following questions in your notebook: 1. Why does a tennis ball float on water, while a golf ball sinks? 2. What is density? 6 Physics and chemistry 2nd ESO 3. How can you calculate the density of an object? 4. Density can be measured in g/cm3 . Can you think of other units for density?
5. How big is a cubic centimeter? And a cubic meter? Key ideas: Density is a specific property. Density is the relationship between the mass of an object and the volume it occupies: d=m/V. The units of density are g/cm3 or kg/m3 . 7. The International System of units As you have just seen, in order to know the density we must know the mass and volume of the object. But as you know, both mass and volume can be given in different units. For example, to measure mass we can use pounds or kilograms. Ideally, we should all use the same units, and this is what we try to achieve with the International System of Units (SI).
Exercises Use the information provided in this link to answer the following questions in your notebook: International System of Units: https://kids.britannica.com/students/article/international-system-of-units-SI/623433 https://en.vikidia.org/wiki/International_System_of_Units 1. What is the International System of Units? 2. What is the difference between base and derived units? 3. Write the name and the symbol of the units of: length, mass, time, and temperature. 4. Give examples (name and the symbol) of derived units.
Case Study: The importance of units Failure to convert English measures to metric values caused the loss of the Mars Climate Orbiter, a spacecraft that smashed into the planet instead of reaching a safe orbit, a NASA investigation concluded. The Mars Climate Orbiter, a key craft in the space agency's exploration of the red planet, vanished on 23 September 1999 after a 10 month journey. It is believed that the craft came dangerously close to the atmosphere of Mars, where it presumably burned and broke into pieces.
To learn more about what happened to the Mars Climate Orbiter, read this article: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1r-0u3R67dVa-qaAgDE5pyPXLWh7CHGyV/view?usp=drive_link Key ideas: 7 Physics and chemistry 2nd ESO The International System of Units is a set of units used internationally by scientists. Base units: meter (length), kilogram (mass), second (time), and kelvin (temperature). 8. Multiples and submultiples of units Exercise 3. (Copy and solve the exercise in your notebook) Search the Internet for the mass of: an ant, an airplane, the planet Earth, a grain of rice and a grain of salt. In the previous exercise, have you used the same units in all five cases?
Probably not, since there are multiples and submultiples of the unit to be able to express very large or very small quantities in a simpler way. Read the information in the link https://www.mathsisfun.com/metric-numbers.html and copy in your notebook the multiples and submultiples from giga to nano. 9. Mathematical tools: Rounding On more than one occasion you used the number pi to make a calculation (for example, to find the area of a circle). What value does this number have? The value of pi that the calculator gives us is the following: However, we never use so many decimal figures, instead we usually round it to 3.14.
8 Physics and chemistry 2nd ESO Rounding a number means expressing it to fewer decimal places than it actually has. This way the number is less exact, but it is easier to work with. For example, think about how you would round the following numbers if we wanted to express them to a single decimal place: 23.33333; 12.77777; 2.55555. In some cases it is very obvious what the rounded value is; in others, not so much. In any case, there are some rules that tell us how a number should be rounded. Exercise Using the information in the presentation Rounding Numbers, 1. Write the four rules for rounding a number in your notebook. 2. Do the example exercises. Exercise 4.

Volume As you already know, volume measures the amount of space that an object occupies. One of the most common units of volume is the liter.
But remember that this is NOT the unit of volume in the SI. Copy in your notebook the following equivalence: 1 L = 1 dm3 Exercises (Copy and solve the exercise in your notebook): 1. What is the equivalence between liters and cubic meters? 2. What is the equivalence between milliliters and cubic centimeters? 3. Find the volume of the following objects: a basketball; a soda can; a marble and a car fuel tank. 4. Convert the volume of the objects in the previous exercise to SI units, using conversion factors. 5. Write the values in the previous exercise using scientific notation. 13. Density So, now that we know how to determine the mass and the volume of an object, we can calculate its density.
11 Physics and chemistry 2nd ESO As we have already seen, density is a specific property of matter that measures the relationship between the mass of an object and the volume it occupies: d=m/V. Exercise 7. (Copy and solve the exercise in your notebook) a. Taking into account the equation for density, and since you know the units of mass and volume, write in your notebook different units for density (circle the SI unit). b. Find the density of the following objects: silver, gold, copper. c. Convert those values to SI. d. Worksheet: Density 14. Lab activity: is our ingot real or fake?
With everything we have learned so far, we are going to determine if the metal we have is silver or another cheaper material and they have tried to scam us. To do this, we are going to use density as a specific property that tells us what material the ingot is made of. Step 1. Find the value for the density of silver and write it down in your notebook. Step 2. Let's determine the density of our ingot. Write in your notebook the mathematical expression that allows us to calculate the density. Therefore, to calculate density we have to measure mass and volume. A. Let's measure the mass.
Write in your notebook what you are going to measure and the answer to the following points: How can we measure the mass of the ingot? Write down in the notebook the measuring instrument you are going to use (name and drawing). Write down the value you get. Express the value of mass in SI units, using conversion factors. Is the measurement you just made a direct or indirect measurement? Justify your answer. 12 Physics and chemistry 2nd ESO B. Let's measure the volume now. Write in your notebook what you are going to measure and the answer to the following points: How can you measure the volume of an object? Describe two different ways to do it. Are these methods direct or indirect?
Justify your answer. We are going to measure the volume of the ingot using a direct method. Write down in the notebook the material that we are going to use (drawings and names), as well as the procedure followed. Now let's measure the volume of the ingot using an indirect method. Write down in the notebook the material that we are going to use (drawings and names), as well as the procedure followed. Compare both results. Write down the value of the volume of the ingot that you have obtained by the direct method. Express the value of the volume in SI units using conversion factors. C. With the data obtained from mass and volume, calculate the value of the density of the ingot.
Write in your notebook the procedure you followed and the calculations you made. D. We are going to compare the different densities that the other groups have obtained with the one that you have obtained. What is the correct value for density? Write in your notebook (in a table) the values of the density obtained by your classmates. Calculate the average value of the density (Google Sheets) Step 3. Conclusion Compare the density obtained experimentally with the value of the density found for silver. Draw conclusions and write them in your notebook. Could we know what material the ingot is actually made of? Answer this question in your notebook. 13 Physics and chemistry 2nd ESO 15.
Problem Solving To solve a problem in science we need to be rigorous. There are a series of steps that we must follow when facing this task, and we must not skip any of them. In addition, these steps must be applied in a certain order. Below are the steps you need to follow to solve a problem, but they are not in order. Decide the order in which you would apply the steps: Step Order Substitute the data in the mathematical expression and solve the equation for the unknown variables. Verify the units in your data (use International System units). Use conversion factors when needed. Read the problem again, writing down both the data and what you need to find out.
Write the mathematical expression that you need to solve this problem. Put a box, circle, or underline your answer with the units. Read the problem carefully underlining the data. Make sure that you understand it very well. Read the problem again to check that you have answered all the questions, and ask yourself if your answer makes sense. Write in your notebook the steps already ordered. Exercise 8.
