Part IV - Option 1 · Inglés PAU Castilla-La Mancha Extraordinaria 2024

OPTION 1: “Does society place too much importance on body image?”. Discuss.

Solución: Sample answer: In contemporary society, appearance often seems to matter more than personal qualities or achievements. Social media, advertising, and popular culture constantly promote unrealistic beauty standards, leading many to believe that our community places far too much importance on body image. First and foremost, digital platforms have intensified this obsession. Platforms such as Instagram and TikTok bombard users, particularly young people, with edited images portraying flawless physiques. Consequently, many individuals develop insecurities, low self-esteem, and serious mental health issues, such as eating disorders or depression, because they constantly compare themselves to unattainable ideals. On the other hand, some argue that physical fitness and taking care of one’s body are essential for good health. While maintaining a healthy lifestyle is undeniably important, this should focus on physical well-being and strength rather than superficial perfection. In conclusion, modern society undoubtedly places excessive pressure on physical appearance. It is crucial to shift the focus towards mental health, individuality, and self-acceptance, celebrating diversity rather than conforming to rigid aesthetic ideals.
