At first, we thought it was just the wind rattling the old wooden shutters, but then a loud, rhythmic thud echoed through the ceiling. My friend Leo and I exchanged nervous glances, wondering if someone had broken into the empty house. Heart pounding, I grabbed a heavy flashlight from the kitchen counter while Leo slowly pushed the creaky door leading to the staircase. We crept up each step, our breath trembling in the silence. The strange scratching sound was definitely coming from his older brother's bedroom. With a deep breath, Leo pushed the bedroom door open. Suddenly, a tiny shadow leaped out from underneath the bed straight toward us! We both screamed, only to realize a terrified stray kitten had sneaked in through an open window. Relieved, we burst into laughter and named him Shadow.
